Analysing Organisational Behaviour

RATIONALE 

This module considers the nature of organisational behaviour and the ways in which the behaviour and actions of people at work can impact on organisational performance. The module investigates individual and group behaviour, together with the internal and external environments of organisations, with a view to identifying methods of improving organisational effectiveness and efficiency. The module focuses on theories that help organisations to understand, predict and influence human behaviour at work. Students will gain an understanding of the psychology of individuals at work and how to influence outcomes. They will also gain the self-awareness needed to help them operate effectively within a variety of work teams. The module considers Human Resources, at a strategic level, as a resource that can be influenced to achieve organisational survival and success and maximize productivity. For students with a particular interest in Human Resource Management, in practice, aspects such as the employee lifecycle, employee development and employment law are covered, in detail, in the module Designing and Developing HR Activities for Maximum Impact. 

AIMS 

Through the completion of this module students will: 

• Explore the influence of organisations on individuals and their lives. 
• Explain the behaviour of individuals at work and the implications of it. 
• Examine ways in which organisational performance might be improved. 

LEARNING OUTCOMES 

On successful completion of this module students will be able to: 

1. Recognise and apply theories relating to the understanding of individual behaviour in the workplace. 
2. Evaluate the nature and significance of formal and informal groups and teams to organisational performance. 
3. Identify and evaluate trends in the development of management theory and practice and their relevance to today’s world of work. 
4. Analyse the main factors in the internal and external organisational environments that will impact on organisational success.
